From 1 November 2017, GP consultations will be exempt from aftercare rules where the GP does not perform the operation. Some patients see their GP instead of their specialist after an operation.

Medicare sometimes asks if these consultations are for the aftercare that usually follows an operation. To get their payment, GPs have had to mark the claim or account with ‘not normal aftercare’.

From 1 November 2017, if the GP doesn’t perform the operation, they won’t have to mark the claim or account to get their payment.

If they do perform an operation and provide a consultation that’s not normal aftercare, the GP will still need to tell us the consultation is 'not normal aftercare' when making the claim.
